BS-6 – The bright side

We all know that BS 6 is coming, and it comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. Here we see the advantage of BS 6.

Environment-friendly

The main advantage of why the government implemented BS 6 is to fight climate change. This is the primary reason we skipped BS 5 and preponed BS 6.

Enabling BS 6 would make the automakers to produce cars that have very low tailpipe emissions.

Tailpipe emissions

The main aim of the government is to bring the emission level. This helps us to bring down the global temperature rise under 2oC as per the pairs agreement.

More than this, cities like New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai are already suffering because of pollution. BS 6 compliant vehicles would definitely have an impact here.

The added advantage

Another important advantage of implementing BS 6 is export. BS 6 is very much similar to the Euro 6 norms followed in Europe. Therefore, if a company makes vehicles which are BS 6 complaint, it is of the global standard for emission. This makes companies export their products abroad which do not benefit them alone but helps the company economy.

Not just vehicle manufacturers but also OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) are also benefited in this. Since the equipment that they make for Indian cars can be used in cars that are manufactured in various parts of the world. Again, a mutual advantage between the company and the country.

But making BS 6 compliant vehicles and equipment would cost a lot. Companies have to invest heavily to become BS 6 ready. This is difficult as no company expected the government to skip BS 5 and preponed BS 6. Even the sales are declining. (More information on automotive sales decline: Click here)

Discounts

This is not an advantage for the company but for the people who are buying vehicles. No person in the country can register a new vehicle which is BS 4 complaint vehicle after 1 April 2020. All the unregistered vehicles will be sent to scrap after this deadline. This would make the manufacturers and retailers to push their stock at a cheap price. This happened when BS 4 was implemented.

Accumulating stock is always a headache for manufacturers and retailers

Therefore, if you are planning to buy a new vehicle, this is the right time to buy. BS 6 along with lower sales pushed the manufacturers to sell their vehicles at cheap prices.

PS: The government has plans to postpone the scrappage policy.
